Foxes Fail to Guard Chicken Coop
An Indiana commission charged with enforcing campaign finance disclosure rules has let a scofflaw politician off the hook. Brooks LaPlante failed to disclose funds he pumped into his campaign for the state legislature. But, because he's a Republican, two Republicans on the Indiana Elections Commission voted against giving him the fine he deserved. This deadlocked the committee two votes to two (the other two are Democrats), which means LaPlante is off the hook. This should serve as a lesson that having enforcement commissions run by the two major parties maybe isn't such a good idea. See details here in the Indianapolis Star.
