Cloudy Reporting In The Sunshine State

As Joe Follick reports in The Gainesville Sun, Florida political parties are exploiting a loophole in Florida law to hide the recipients some of their spending. Relying on the absurd position that they aren't "political committees", the parties have been listing only their payments to credit card companies, not what was purchased by the party credit cards.

Combined, the state's Democratic and Republican parties put more than $1 million in expenses on their American Express cards alone in 2003-4.

So much for the Sunshine State.

The parties insist they're only complying with the law, without commenting on the ethics of concealing campaign expenditures from the public. Phooey. The proof is in the pudding. If the political parties wanted full disclosure, they could do it easily. Instead of working on solving the problem, they hide behind it.
